This dashboard provides analytics on the SDG relatedness of research in business schools.

For the development of the RSM SDG mapper, our custom-made Machine Learning model, we used open data and open source technology where possible.

The model is based on a State-of-the-Art algorithm developed by Google (namely, Google's BERT). We fine tune and validated this model on the Springer Nature SciGraph, an open dataset with over 7 million publication abstracts. We label this dataset with search queries.

The search queries (1 for each SDG) were developed through an eclectic meta research method. We incorporate multiple sets of keywords developed by different SDG mapper research groups around the world (the Aurora network, University of Bergen, the Open SDG-ontology by TechnoteAI and the RLEX SDG resources), all have published open data sets. By incorporating multiple data sources, we ensure a robustly labeled dataset with multiple rounds of validation.  We update this procedure periodically with new and updates datasets. The RSM SDG mapper is now applied to all kinds of results by RSM, to demonstrate the SDG relatedness and relevance of our portfolio in research, education and engagement.

We also want to help the business education industry to benefit from our work. This is why we started to develop the SDG dashboard for schools and journals. For the development of this Triple crown dashboard we retreived meta data of all articles FT-50 and UTD journals from 2000-2019 from SCOPUS (on 24-8-2020), a dataset of over 73K meta data records. Next, we mapped the abstracts of all publications to SDG relevance.

As a conservative rule of decision. Only when the RSM SDG mapper model is more than 50% confident of the relatedness, we count a publication as relevant to a specific SDG. Below you can find the results of our model's predictions. We aggerate the results along multiple dimension:

1. Global analysis of all publications in the FT-50 and UTD journal list
2. Triple Crown Accredited Business schools. The full list can be found here.
3. Journals in the FT-50 and UTD lists
4. Offering benchmark analytics on both schools and journals for SDG ratio’s

In the analyses we present various insights:

1. SDG publications over time
2. Share of SDG publications within the total number of publications
3. SDG Profiles for individual schools and journals
4. SDG Heatmaps
5. SDG rankings based on the SDG share
6. High scoring publications

We also aggregate clusters of SDGs to so called 'SDG categories'. As a demonstrator, we follow the logic of the “SDG wedding cake” model, (Stockholm Resilience Centre), combining SDG’s on Planet/Biospere, People/Society and the Economy. The following mapping is applied to determine the SDG categories:

Planet/Biosphere:        

SDG - 6, SDG - 13, SDG - 14, SDG - 15

People/Society:

SDG - 1, SDG - 2, SDG - 3, SDG - 4, SDG - 5, SDG - 7, SDG - 11, SDG - 16

Economy:

SDG - 8, SDG - 9, SDG - 10, SDG - 12

We intend to add more different perspectives on combinations of SDG’s.

The dashboard is currently in BETA, to test the user needs and user experience.

An important disclaimer in relation to this dashboard is the fact that European schools are over-represented within the Triple Crown schools. This means that the schools which are included in this dashboard are predominantly located in Europe. A visualisation of the regional distribution of the Triple Crown schools is therefore given below.

We see that Triple Crown Business Schools are publishing more in the selected journals

In the figure below we can see that the share of Triple Crown Business Schools publications within the selected journals has increased from around 7% in 2000 to over 30% in 2019.

We see that the SDG contribution of the selected journals (UTD and FT50) is primarily focussed on 'People' and 'Economy' oriented Sustainable Development Goals.
